Joomla is a free open source content management. This software is under General Public License and can be used by anybody to do anything he or she deems fit. Joomla is quite robust and professionals and many are finding it easier to use it in creating different types of websites than before. People are beginning to appreciate its usefulness and easy to use options.

There is current a large happy and vibrant Joomla users communities that are growing daily. It is common to see varieties of templates built by developers to suite any project they are undertaking. Some of these templates are free while others are sold at some cheap prices. It is necessary to point out that the free Joomla templates aren’t inferior quality, as a matter of fact, the best quality Joomla templates that had ever been produced were shared freely in the Joomla communities. It is common to see many people sharing Joomla templates and tools freely in the various communities.

Joomla came into being in 17th August 2005 but wasn’t operational till 1st September of that year when the name Joomla was actually announced. The actual first release of the software was called Joomla 1.0.0 and that was on the 16th of September. Many believe that that first release was actually the re-branded version of Mambo 4.5.2.3. It created enough buzz and excitement within the users communities that it bagged the Packt Publishing Open Source Content Management System Award in 2006 and 2007 consecutively.

It is very easy to build great websites using free Joomla templates but be reminded that you have to pay close attention to be able to learn how to use the software. Apart from having an official Joomla forum with about 2 millions posts, there are lots of tutorials that would easily put one through on how bets to start using Joomla to start creating super websites. The unique nature of internet also relates to Joomla because there are plenty of information and tutorials all over the internet regarding Joomla, its uses and how to tweak the templates.

Joomla content management system works by making it possible for its users to be able use several features attached to it to fully integrate to the basic software. These features can be quite useful to any website such as adding a user roll, a calendar, a forum, a blog and lots of other awesome features that are common among the interactive websites we have today on the internet.

Joomla can be used to create both very large websites such as the databases websites and very little ones such as the one pages websites. The difference in all these websites are the templates used to create them. You can get good templates from any of thousands of templates that litter the internet or you can have a unique template designed just for you but note that this would come with a price which is unnecessary in my opinion.

Choosing free Joomla templates is easy, just search online and choose based on your taste and desire. Using Joomla to create stunning websites is just a breeze.

dKit is a flexible Drupal theme framework that should make it easy to build nearly any kind of design.
And in order to test this approach, I decided to code two subthemes before I released the framework itself.

HTML features:

The framework comes with a three column and source ordered layout with fixed width. The theme is structured the “traditional” way: HeaderMain area (with three collapsible columns) - Footer.
Nevertheless any kind of layout can be applied to subthemes by modifying page.tpl.php.

CSS features:

The CSS definitions consist of three main parts:

  1. Global reset-font settings that are based on the YUI library.
  2. Numerous enhancements to Drupal’s default styles that pursue a consistent look not only throughout the Admin pages but also in all of Drupal’s core modules.
  3. Very minimalistic visual styles that are specific to dKit’s unique look.

All settings can easily be overwritten by your own styles.

The layout.css file is extensively well commented and is meant for documentation purposes.layout-min.css contains the minified styles for production use.
When you open the info file, you will see that both CSS files have been set. This makes it possible to use either one of them in subthemes by disabling the other one.

How can you use the theme?

  • As a standalone theme for your website. Though it comes with minimalistic styling, it can be used the way it is.
  • As an admin theme.
  • To build a new theme by modifying the files directly.
  • To create subthemes – the recommended approach.

How to build a subtheme

Download the blank subtheme from this page, rename the dkit-subtheme folder and the dkit-subtheme.info file to your desired theme name.

The blank subtheme contains an empty style.css file and a page.tpl.php that is identical to the one in the dkit theme package.

When you build your own subtheme you will probably want to start working with the non-minified file that is loaded into the subtheme’s info file by default. After finishing the theme, you can loadlayout-min.css.

Follow those steps to load layout-min.css:

Remove the semicolon before stylesheets[all][] = css/layout-min.css
and add a semicolon before stylesheets[all][] = css/layout.css
Don’t forget to clear Drupal’s cache after modifying the info file.

A few customization tips:

  • To change the width and/or background colours of the sidebars: take a look atlayout.css where the corresponding code lines are commented.
  • To make the theme fluid: change the width of the wrapping #page div to 98% for example. But remember to add a min-width and a min-width hack for IE 6.
  • To overwrite the overall font-family: set the font for
    body, input, select, textarea, button {
       font-family: ...;
    }
  • To customize the font sizes for different parts of the theme: Follow YUI’s font table.

The theme is dual licensed under the GPL and MIT licenses.
